For years, mental health professionals and the general public have stigmatized borderline personality disorder. This stigma causes additional shame for the suffering individual, making it more difficult to reach out for help. When they do seek help, they are often refused services.
Possibly you, or other professionals you’ve encountered, have made statements like:
“I don’t work with borderlines”
“I screen heavily for borderlines” “They are highly manipulative” “They can’t be helped” “They like drama” |
Join us on February 7 to learn the truth about borderline personality disorder and about things you can indeed do to help this highly emotional population. There is hope and even recovery when professionals care enough to educate themselves and learn helpful techniques. You won’t leave this workshop a qualified DBT therapist, but you will achieve new insight and hopefully desire to learn more.
As a result of attending this presentation:
- Participants will gain understanding of diagnostic criteria of borderline personality disorder.
- Participants will gain basic understanding of dialectical behavior therapy as developed by Marsha Linehan.
- Participants will gain knowledge regarding the impact of stigma on clients with borderline personality disorder, and how they may be contributing to the stigma.
- Participants will see the usefulness of using DBT for clients with borderline and borderline features.
- Participants will enjoy an increase in hope when working with this special population.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Cindy Pechon graduated from LSU with a Masters in Social Work in 1996. Her initial work in the field was providing mental health services to children in the office and school setting. In 1998 she founded the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project for the 21st Judicial District, and as director of the program she also provided services to domestic violence offenders from 1998 – 2008. In 2008, Cindy moved to Vermont and worked for a large non profit community mental health center, The Clara Martin Center. This is where she was first introduced to DBT, and was fortunate enough to receive extensive training and practice. In 2014 she moved back to St. Tammany Parish and resumed private practice. It was a goal of hers to bring DBT to the Northshore area and she began seeking other therapists to work with in this effort. Currently the Northshore DBT Consult group has 7 therapists providing individual and group therapy services to clients in Covington, LA.
