The Virtue of Giving Up
Tuesday, November 7
7:00 - 8:30 pm
MEN AND WOMEN WELCOME
Presented by Patricia Stout, LCSW-BACS
and Elaine Wiltse DeSmith
Ever Feel Like Giving Up?
Imagine this scenario: Undiagnosed Aspergers - on the spectrum of autism. Blindness from birth. Raised by a mother with schizophrenia. Driving perfectionism paired with multiple disabilities. Through this, the discovery of “the virtue of giving up”. Overwhelming challenges met with wit, imperfect but ever-seeking faith, unique insight and outstanding storytelling ability.
Come hear about the story of Judith Anne Dent, PhD, related by marriage to one of the Women’s Center’s “Founding Mothers”, Patricia Stout, LCSW.
Patricia’s childhood step-dad was legally blind, and his second marriage of 28 years was to Judy, the author of the book that Patricia will share excerpts and insight from. Incredible IQ, memory, and vocabulary, staggering physical and spatial and neurological challenges make up the author’s unique perspective, which she makes accessible and relatable to all who have ever felt different or misunderstood, and to all who have tried to live life based on someone else’s yardstick.
Patricia and co-editor Elaine Wiltse DeSmith, Friend of the Women’s Center, compiled Judy’s memoir notes into the book entitled The Virtue of Giving Up: Growing Up Blind and Autistic by Judith Anne Dent, PhD. Thanks also to Bev Chase and Martin Fledderman for reviewing the manuscript. Patricia and her step-dad Blair also contributed writing in the book. An audio book has been completed as well so that visually impaired people may access the book.
Excerpts from the book will be shared in the context of psychology, spirituality, differing abilities, varying learning styles, and “the virtue of giving up”...benefits of acceptance, surrender, compassionate letting go, releasing perfectionism, and being true to one’s unique and authentic self.
The presentation will be followed by a Q & A session. We will have some small group discussion, regarding how these topics affect our own lives, whatever our varying abilities or challenges or family situations.
(The option to purchase a copy of the book personally signed by Patricia and Elaine will be available at the end of the evening. Like all events at the Women’s Center, we strive to focus on bringing you a direct experience, so the evening will not be an advertisement for the book!)
Cost/Value: By Donation or optional book purchase.
