Summer Solstice Women’s Dance and Ritual
Friday, June 21
7:00 - 8:30 pm
A Women’s Dance in Celebration of the Summer Solstice
(Drummers Welcome!!)
Come dance it up and outward; dance it down and inward; come celebrate the turning of the year in a supportive circle. We’ll dance barefoot and free-form, letting your body move as it wants.
The Summer Solstice, also known as Midsummer, occurs when one of the Earth's poles has its maximum tilt toward the Sun. At the moment of maximum tilt, like when breathing in shifts to breathing out, the days will start to shorten as the nights begin to grow longer.
The solstice reminds us of the ebb and flow of life: we may experience moments of great lightness of being, confidence and fullness in a happy peak moment, only to find it giving way to uncertainty, shadows and the need to explore the unknown. The Buddhists remind us of this condition of constant change with the term Impermanence.
You are welcome if you are a newcomer to dancing or a long-time dancer. You are welcome if you feel awkward or self-conscious or if you are totally confident dancing.
The music starts slowly then builds, then slows again at the end. No particular dance skill or knowledge of steps is needed. Just bring willingness and curiosity, allowing the movement to nourish and bring you more fully to your senses.
Drummers Welcome! Don't want to dance? Come anyway and support the dance celebration with drumming!
