Are you hearing more about mindfulness and wondering how to incorporate it into your work as a counselor or social worker, to help those you serve?
Whether you are new to the concept of mindfulness or have already developed a practice for you and your clients, this interdisciplinary training will deepen your experiential approach to a rich evidence-based modality. Join psychotherapists and adjunct practitioners to learn why mindfulness works, best practices, and how to offer it to your clients directly or via collaborative referrals.
The morning session is led by experienced clinicians Tom Sweetland, LCSW, Carolyn Burns, LMFT, and Patricia Stout, LCSW-BACS and includes group activities and topics such as: third wave of psychology, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Mindfulness-Based Therapy for Depression, Compassion-Focused Therapy, ACT, DBT, Therapeutic Breathwork, as well as consideration of when to use which method with which client at which time.
Adjunct and complementary therapies will also be addressed as well as various styles of incorporating methods into practice and ethical considerations to adopting mindfulness techniques in psychotherapy. Theory and information will be interspersed with direct experience of mindfulness exercises. Meet the presenters of the morning sessions:

Tom Sweetland, LCSW is in private practice in New Orleans, using mindfulness and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) as core modalities. He has training and experience in Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Mr. Sweetland is a graduate of the Simmons School of Social Work in Boston, Massachusetts, and has been on the faculty of both Harvard University Medical School and Simmons School of Social Work.
Patricia Stout, LCSW-BACS Is the owner of Breath of Life Counseling, LLC and the co-founder of the non-profit Women’s Center for Healing & Transformation. For nearly 30 years, she has practiced clinical social work and holistic psychotherapy in a variety of settings including medical, inpatient and outpatient addictions centers, mental health treatment, schools, and private practice. She holds certifications in Therapeutic Breathwork and Spiritual Psychology and has presented about this work at regional and international conferences. Mindfulness has infused her group and individual work and her personal practice from a variety of sources, including trainings with Jack Kornfield, PhD and Jacquelyn Small, MSSW.
Carolyn Burns, LMFT uses mindfulness in her work with her clients and has cultivated a mindfulness practice that guides her daily life. She works with individuals and couples treating trauma, grief, anxiety, depression and attachment/relationship issues. Currently she is enjoying bringing her mindfulness practice into method through DBT Skills training practices. She is a member of the Northshore DBT Practice Group and co-facilitates DBT groups for non-borderline participants.

- Mind-Body Skills for Yourself and Your Clients
Suzanne Harper, LMT, MHEd
Suzanne Harper of Abita Healing Arts, Masters in Health Education, Licensed Massage Therapist will present: How do Mind-Body Skills increase mindfulness? What is involved in a Mind-Body practice? Learn or deepen skills such as attention exercises, sensation-based meditation, Qigong, and mindful eating. Practice self-observation. Sadani Janet Houtz, Yoga Therapist
Based on the Pancamaya model for Yoga Therapy, experience no-mat yogic tools and skills that can be be both practical and inspiring to therapists, patients and clients. More than just postures, you will experience breath and sound with integrated, user-friendly physical action to shift energy toward movement or stability supporting physical, energetic, mental, emotional & spiritual balance. - Staying Steady When the Ground is Moving: Mindful Caregiving - Lisa Sigsworth, RN and Hypnotherapy Trainer THIS SESSION IS NOW FULL - PLEASE MAKE ANOTHER SELECTION
Lisa Sigsworth will offer grounding and guided imagery and other tips for working with Mindfulness in the process of caregiving, both for clinicians as caregivers and for family members of those in the death process. Kelly McGee, Licensed Massage Therapist and Registered Karuna Reiki Master
Kelly will present and demonstrate how Reiki and Massage can be used to implement mindfulness into daily life. The specific ways these techniques can aid psychotherapy practice will be discussed, as well as a component of self-care for the therapist. The middle way that is associated with mindfulness is aided by accessing both sides of the brain. We will explore Visual Journaling and other bridge-building practices. Learn, through direct experience, various breathwork practices for use in psychotherapy, and how to introduce mindfulness when the breath is NOT a good entry point for relaxation. (See bio above)
Suzanne Harper is a licensed massage therapist with over 40 years experience practicing and 10 years teaching. She has a MA in Health Education with special interest in Mind-Body practices including Tai Chi/Qigong, meditation, visualization, nutrition, and healing. Her specialized training includes The Wen Wu School of Martial Arts, Barefoot Doctors Academy, Neuromuscular Therapy Center, The Center for Mind-Body Medicine, Bionomics Health Institute, Optimum Health Institute, and Chi Nei Tsang Institute. Suzanne has a passion for learning, sharing, healing, and personal transformation. She brings a sensitive touch and light sense of humor to her practice and teaching. Suzanne lives and practices in Abita Springs.
Sadani Janet Houtz, an IAYT certified yoga therapist, considers herself to be a lifelong student and teacher around the mind/body/breath connection and is passionate about optimal wellness which is unique for each person and requires appropriate adaptations and applications of yogic tools and other methodologies every step of the way. For the past 20 years she has helped others make gradual changes in lifestyle patterns that deeply influence their ability to feel balanced, vital and inspired to live with purpose. She is currently working as part of a team of therapists/art therapists, psychologists/MSWs at a Behavioral Health clinic in Baton Rouge.

Lisa Sigsworth is an RN, Certified Hospice & Palliative Care Nurse, Certified Hypnotist and Hypnosis Instructor. In addition to her MS in Health Sciences, she has trained in Dharmsala and Bir, India with the Tibetan monks on mindfulness meditation, End of Life and contemplative practice of the ancient Tibetan wisdom traditions. She has worked in the public, non-profit and private sectors for the past 25 years in the field of hospice, home care, rehab and hypnosis. Lisa is the author of the book Crossing Over: Your Guide to Dying with Dignity. She travels the United States speaking and training the public, student and professional employees on End of Life care, Life Coaching, Hypnosis, Ethics and Pain Management.

Kelly McGee is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Karuna Reiki Master, a Certified Traditional Naturopath-in-training, as well as mother to four young children. She uses the modalities of Clinical Swedish Massage, Reiki, Reflexology, Polarity, Myofascial Release and Cranio-Sacral Therapy, as well as Young Living Essential Oils to help clients achieve wellness in all aspects of life - physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Kelly's touch has been described as firm, yet also gentle; deeply relaxing and intuitive. Her massage technique is thorough and mindful. Kelly has been teaching classes on Reiki, massage, essential oils, herbal medicine, toxin-free living and a natural approach to parenting for over 10 years and very much enjoys being a resource in the community for this lifegiving information!
