Helpful vs Habitual:
Being a White Ally in Social Justice Movements

Picture
Wednesday, August 19
7:00 - 8:15 pm
On Zoom

Even with the best of intentions to support Black Lives Matter and other social justice movements, we bring our habitual ways of “helping,” thinking and interacting with us.

With confusion between wanting to help but not wanting to be seen in the “white savior” role, what’s a concerned White person to do? Furthermore, how might certain attitudes that are “baked in” to our dominant culture hamper our best efforts, and how can we avoid these pitfalls?

How can we discern when we are helping others or simply helping our own self-image and assuaging guilt?

These are tough questions, and in true Women’s Center style, they will be addressed with compassion, yet without shying away from discomfort, in order to facilitate transformation.

Join a 75-minute dialogue, with past board member and activist LaToya Johnson and friends about the majority's involvement in minority movements, specifically white people's role in social and racial justice movements
.
Topics will include how white privilege shows up in today's movement, how to utilize that privilege to benefit the movement, what role(s) the majority usually take on themselves, whether healthy or not, why they see/place themselves in such roles, and what role(s) they actually should be filling.

Open to all genders. Designed for white people, and open to everyone.

LaToya Johnson, MSW, CSW
LaToya Johnson, MSW, CSW is the Coordinator at the New Orleans Workers’ Center for Racial Justice. Her work centers around racial and economic justice, which includes addressing local policies that affect Black and Brown workers throughout the state of Louisiana. LaToya is a former practicum counselor at the Women's Center for Healing & Transformation in Abita Springs, Louisiana where she also served as a board member for two years. She enjoys traveling, especially internationally, and as a NOLA native and homeowner, her love for food and music festivals is only trumped by backyard BBQs and lounge sessions.
