Join mental health advocate and licensed attorney Amber Sheppard of Sheppard Law PLLC along with her service dog Tubbs as she explains the various Louisiana Specialty Courts that mental health professionals may encounter in their practices.
Specialty Courts in Louisiana are aimed to reduce incarceration for individuals who suffer from addiction, substance abuse disorders, or mental health disorders. She will discuss how individuals get referred to the specialty courts and how they operate. The courts include:

- Sobriety Court
- Reentry Court
- Assistive Outpatient Treatment Court
- Behavioral Health Court, and
- Veterans' Court
Learning objectives of this training:
- To educate mental health professionals, in their roles as both counselors/social workers and as business owners, on the various types of specialty courts utilized in Louisiana.
- Of particular importance is educating and informing the mental health community on how they can be involved in the specialty courts.
- To illustrate how the process of each court can benefit attendees’ clients or their community.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Amber Sheppard, the managing partner of Sheppard Law, has always marched to the beat of her own drum. Her approach to law and serving the community is no different. She has set out to prove you can be an advocate for your community while still maintaining your humanity, humility, and humor.
Before becoming a full time attorney licensed in Louisiana and Mississippi, Amber was a strength sport athlete and nonprofit owner. She organized Olympic weightlifting in Mississippi and developed international medalists. Amber’s passion shows in her practice, having helped “mom and pop” shops to international brands. Always one to give back, Amber has launched a free small business webinar series infusing humor into legal topics beneficial to start ups and large brands.
Amber and her service dog Tubbs travel the region educating businesses, organizations, and residents on mental health and service dog laws. Amber’s passion is writing and educating: she has been published over twenty times in state, national, and international publications as it pertains to legal issues that affect business owners or service dog handlers. She has also submitted Amicus Curiae Briefs on behalf of various dog rescues in Louisiana. Amber has been named to 40 Under 40 and Best Attorney in East St. Tammany Parish by EDGE Magazine in 2020 and 2021. She was featured in Sophisticated Woman Magazine's September 2021 issue as a top Northshore Attorney. Next year Amber begins her newest role: legal studies professor.
