Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
and the Power of Resilience
Friday, January 10
9:00 am - 12:15 pm
Check-in begins at 8:30 am
3.0 CEUs approved for Social Workers and Counselors. This presentation is also open to the general public (no charge if not receiving CEU credit)
This presentation will teach participants to recognize the impact that both positive and adverse experiences can have on human development, from childhood to adulthood. The Brain Architecture Game will use hands-on, tactile activity to demonstrate the fundamentals of the relationship between experience and brain development. Discussion will help participants recognize implications for their practice and lives. The film Resilience will deepen participants’ understanding of the lifelong impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences, and provide some concrete examples of evidence-based prevention and intervention for childhood trauma.
Resilience is a documentary featuring several agencies and organizations throughout the country who have adopted trauma-informed approaches. Through the stories of clients, providers and experts in the fields of neuroscience, child development and mental health, pediatric medicine, and community organizing, we see real-life examples of ACEs and resilience science in action across a variety of settings.
Resilience gives a background on the science of trauma, experience-based development, and resilience building, and a picture of what it looks like to make the paradigm shift from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”
After the screening, attendees will engage in a practical activity that illustrates the effect of ACEs and the power of resilience. Clinical applications and action steps will be discussed.
