An Evening of Louisiana Poetry
with Diane Elayne Dees

Also featuring Northshore Poets Dennis Formento and Orisia Haas

Saturday, February 25
6:30 - 8:30 pm
at the Women's Center

Poet Diane Elayne Dees will read from her two latest chapbooks, The Wild Parrots of Marigny, a collection of poems about New Orleans and Louisiana, and The Last Time I Saw You, a poetic memoir of New Orleans photographer and art critic D. Eric Bookhardt.

The event will also feature an open mic. Those who wish to read will need to arrive at the Women’s Center by 6:00 pm to sign up. Open mic readers: Your poems do not have to be about Louisiana, and, you do not have to be a woman— all are welcome to read! Plan on reading for five minutes, and direct any questions to Diane at 985-264-8658 or dianeedees@gmail.com.

Admission is free; donations to the Women's Center online or at the door are appreciated.
Space is limited - arrive early! We want to include everyone, so please, poets, come and sign in no later than 6:00 pm.

Diane Elayne Dees, an eight-time Pushcart Prize nominee, is also the author of the chapbook, Coronary Truth (Kelsay Books), and three Origami Poems Project microchaps, Beach Days, Pandemic Times and Missing Amy, which memorialized the tenth anniversary of the death of Amy Winehouse. Her poetry, short fiction and creative nonfiction have been published in many journals and anthologies. She is a member of the St. Tammany chapter of 100,00 Poets for Change.

Slidell poet Dennis Formento is the author of Spirit Vessels (FootHills Publishing), Looking for an Out Place (FootHills Publishing) and Cineplex (Paper Press). Formento edited Meschabe: The Journal of Surregionalism from 1990 to 2001, and fronted the free jazz/free verse band, Frank Zappatistas. He is the St. Tammany Parish Organizer for 100,000 Poets for Change.

Orisia Haas -
Writer, playwright and poet Orisia Haas is a private alternative medicine practitioner who was, for ten years, a regular guest on WWL Television’s morning news health segment. In 1983, she wrote a play which re-created the social, cultural and lived experience of the Holocaust, and she was invited by Israel’s U.N. ambassador to the United States to address the United Nations. Orisia had two books of poetry published in Europe, and she created, wrote, designed, and produced Puppets with Purpose for young children, a show which she later brought to schools throughout Louisiana. Orisia’s favorite writing theme is nature.

The Wild Parrots of Marigny explores life in New Orleans and Louisiana—the oddities, the frustrations, the unique culture, and the sometimes breathtaking natural beauty. Hurricanes, egrets, Creole tomatoes, the BP oil spill, and Louisiana’s swamp splendor are all included in this collection, which also focuses on life during and after Hurricane Katrina.
