Women's monthly meeting of ERACE, Abita Springs Chapter, active monthly since early 2013 with the blessing of New Orleans original ERACE chapter. Join the dialogue as we continue our commitment to address the difficult and painful subject of racism and find ways to treat fellow human beings of all colors with love and respect.
ERACE provides a forum for concerned people to come together around issues related to racism. ERACE's purpose is to create an atmosphere in which people feel free to explore perceptions, assumptions, and biases without fear of ridicule or personal attack. Within the ERACE setting, people can open their hearts and minds by questioning others and themselves in structured conversations.
Those attending ERACE meetings often leave feeling uplifted by the honest communication that takes place, at times we also leave uncomfortable, but connected. It is this type of person-to-person interaction that some believe offers the greatest hope in the struggle against racism.
Just a discussion? Some point out that we are "just" a discussion group. While that is the primary purpose and function of the group, it leads to many alliances and offshoot connections that members take action together in, or with other groups. Trainings, activism, field trips, book recommendations and other activities have resulted, as well as a place to recharge our batteries for actions that are taken outside of the group, often with other members of this group. Creating a space for respectful discourse allows participants the space and time to hear and share in a way where views are often reconsidered instead of further polarized. Creating a format for relationships to develop gives us the possibility of taking action from a more well-thought-out place that is influenced by others.
All are welcome that respect our group format and guidelines, which are shared at the beginning of each group.
