Mexico’s Day of the Dead Celebrations – Catalina Reyna
This presentation traces the origins of the celebration to the pre-Hispanic belief in duality, in which death was considered a natural part of life, as well as the idea that in the afterlife the soul travels through different stages. From Catholicism, the tradition incorporates the idea of communication with souls and the afterlife. We will analyze various elements of Day of the Dead celebrations: papel picado; altars and ofrendas; burning copal incense; the use of cempasuchitl (marigold flowers) to build pathways for the souls; cleaning & decoration of graves; music; and special dishes prepared. Born in Mexico City, Catalina makes a living as an engineer. Dancing is one of her many passions and she loves to share with others transformational material that life has given her.

Fracking: Assessing Risks for Ourselves, Our Children, Our Children’s Children – Barbara Jackson
We will look at the ways the proposed use of 60,000 acres of St. Tammany Parish for horizontal hydraulic fracturing could impact, for generations to come, our health, our water, and what we treasure about our lives on the Northshore and wish to pass on to those who follow us. We will then look at what is being done to try to stop fracking & how we can help. Barbara is a Financial Advisor who retired to Abita Springs with dreams of being a “villager” instead of a “big city” girl. In order to make that dream possible she has become a dog in the fight to see fracking banned in St. Tammany Parish.
