Breaking White Silence - Linda Allen
How many times have you been in conversation with white people when someone made a racist statement about People of Color? Maybe you didn’t agree with it but you didn’t know what to say or how to challenge it. In this class we will violate taboo—we will talk about why we are afraid to speak up and how we can overcome our hesitancy. We will acknowledge our feelings of powerlessness and look toward our very real possibilities for transformation, both as individuals and as a society. Linda Allen shares her lifelong interest in unraveling racism. She worked with the anti-racist organizations Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism and Southern Institute for Education and Research at Tulane University. She has volunteered with the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond, as well as with European Dissent, a collective of white people who are committed to undoing white cultural and political dominance of social institutions.

Intersectionality in Feminism: From Margin to the Center - Patricia Stout, LCSW
What do women’s rights have to do with racism, classism and homophobia? Intersectionality perspective was developed by women of color during the 1960s and is relevant today. Intersectionality perspective also provides solutions to creating a more equalitarian world. Patricia has a Masters in Clinical Social Work, specializing in Systems Theory, from Florida State University. Her post-graduate training is in Transpersonal Psychology, and she has specialized in women's issues. Much of the material from this session is provided by Ashly Patterson, M.A., sociology professor and co-author of Reading Feminist Theory: From Modernity to Postmodernity.

Allowing Beads to Elevate our Mind and Body through our Spirit - Elaine Pote
Beading is a skill; one we can all learn. It is learned by the body and mind, but can be elevated by the spirit. In our workshop we’ll make a pair of earrings which embodies our creative spirit by tapping into our right brain. But by using our left brain, we’ll give them structure and form. Elaine has been serious beader since 2001. She is a self-taught artist. Her inspiration comes from the most mundane places: airports, restaurants, dash boards. It is a skill; the artistry comes with knowing your media and practicing. Elaine enjoys bead weaving, wire-work, some metal work and fibers to name a few. Elaine muses: "I think beading/jewelry making will keep my brain active and working healthfully as I age, as it engages every level of function. Beading is also a form of loving kindness meditation for me. I send that person love and light, and my heart lightens just through the act of being loving." She has a degree in Anthropology from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
