Sierra Club Talk: The Acolapissa Nation
Thursday, September 19
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
at the Women's Center
Our September 19th meeting will feature Jack Cantrell and his extensive knowledge of the Acolapissa Nation, a people whose ancestral lands were on Bayou Castine. He will recount stories from first hand journals from the early 1700s, describing the complex relationship between the French and the Acolapissa. He will also describe events leading to the massacre that took place on land that would later become Mandeville, Louisiana.

MEET THE SPEAKER
Jackson Cantrell is a uniquely capable 21-year-old, and a lifelong resident of Mandeville, Louisiana. At The College of William & Mary, he has completed his work for the baccalaureate degree in History and is now in his senior year completing a second major in Government.
Jackson's interest in the culture and governance of different peoples started at home in Mandeville. He became a published historian in 2019 with the online release by Louisiana's Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism of two of his research works. His studies primarily regarded enslaved families of the Fontainebleau Plantation, now a state park. He compiled a secondary summary on Native inhabitants of the same grounds and dedicated two historical markers in the park honoring both groups. His efforts, along with others, helped preserve culturally significant lands at Pottery Hill in Mandeville and at Fontainebleau State Park.
Cantrell's academic and professional interest is in the international arena of diplomacy. He began his college career studying in Florence, Italy for 10 months. He followed with a half summer in Berlin, examining World War II history, and a month spent studying Latin American conflict in Havana, Cuba. He holds collegiate proficiency in three foreign languages, including Ancient Egyptian.
