Oftentimes, our society wants to protect children, yet when confronted with trauma, we believe they are resilient. As practitioners, how do we build resilience after a trauma related incident, abandonment or distorted thinking patterns? It can seem like an insurmountable goal.
Playing may not seem like "therapy", yet it can help create a relationship between client and therapist that leads to a free-flowing openness where feelings can be named and identified. Improving one's emotional intelligence through this process assists a client in creating self-confidence and resilience.

- Explain what Play Therapy is and is not
- Gain insight regarding the approaches that may elicit the identification of emotions for young children and teens

Amber Picou-Broadnax, Ed.D. and Stephanie Hayden Amber Picou-Broadnax, Ed.D. is a former foster parent and foster parent trainer. Dr. Amber's interests include the resilience and emotional intelligence of foster children who experience trauma and struggle with Reactive Attachment Disorder and Anxiety. Dr. Amber is the Co-Director of the Women's Center for Healing & Transformation, owner of Amber Picou Consulting, a mother of three drama-filled girls and two crazy dogs, caregiver for her mother-in-law and a mentor to an adoptive mom, a foster mom and two doctoral students.
Stephanie Hayden, a graduate of Tulane University, is a former social services director. Her work centers on educating families about the stages of child development and working with children and adult clients who struggle with past trauma and the ability to recover. Stephanie currently works as a therapist, specializing in Trauma Therapy, with Trinity Counseling Center. |
