Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based practice designed to help clients build desire, confidence and commitment to change when addressing diverse behaviors and symptoms that may be associated with mental health disorders. Accurate empathy is a key principle to understanding and applying motivational interviewing strategies in practice. Participants will learn empathy building strategies that may be applied for professional growth as well as with clients.

Participants will learn empathy building strategies that may be applied for professional growth as well as with clients.
Participants will be able to:
- Understand the therapeutic value of empathy in motivational interviewing and other counseling theories when treating various diagnoses including addictive disorders
- Identify how aspects of motivation impact commitment to change behaviors associated with common mental health and substance use disorders
- Practice empathy building strategies to develop a deeper understanding of clients
- Apply more complex reflection skills in practice for more accurate empathy
- Apply empathy building strategies to help clients develop empathic understanding in his/her relationships
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Dr. Angela “Angie” Wood earned her MSW from Southern Illinois University in 1992, and a Ph.D. in social work from Tulane University in 2006. She has been a licensed clinical social worker for over 20 years, working in a variety of behavioral health settings such as addictions, mental health, criminal/juvenile justice, and family preservation. As a workshop trainer and educator for over 15 years, Dr. Wood has presented on clinical supervision, motivational interviewing, and substance abuse. Her research interests include the dissemination and implementation of motivational interviewing across practice settings. Dr. Wood is an instructor and Field Coordinator for the undergraduate social work program at Southeastern Louisiana University, and has been teaching online for Walden University’s School of Social Work since 2013. She is one of two members of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers in Louisiana and has conducted over 50 workshops related to motivational interviewing.
